Dear all,

Here is my entry in Natalia's book.
I found it very difficult allthough I love Klimt !!!

I made an interpretation of Klimt's major work in Brussels in Palais Stoclet. It is a very secret place no one is let in to visit, so I did it by pictures in books of course.

Did everyone do an entry? The book is not full at all ! But I suppose so, since Natalia is next in the list.

my contribution to Frida's book is done. It was inspired by Frida's preferred topics already used by the others: heart, flight, leafs... Especially I was thinking about "Self-portrait with monkey", "Self-portrait in colier of blackthorn", "Self-portrait at the boarder between Mexico and US"and "Henri Ford Hospital".

We know that Melissa’s book is gone to Tim and that she cannot get it back. I hope that everything is ok with Tim and he will answer….

In the meantime I think it will be nice if we start a new moly for Melissa. As I already said, I’m ready to buy and start this book if you guys will participate in the drawing. Alechinsky is on the way to Slovakia!

I got really interested in Alechinsky's theories and I did some reading about them. There is a book on Google Books which goes into some details about his use of colour, line and text. What I decided to do with my entry was to progress from fairly figurative drawing into more abstract shapes (which often marked his art). All in all, I felt that the metaphor of Lodz, the city once called a Promised Land was not compensated.

Danica's book, Frida Kahlo theme

My contribution in Danica's book on the Frida Kahlo theme.

I tried a self-portrait, as most of Frida's paintings are self portrait illustrating her sorrows, pains, questions... with greenery around, like she also did in her paintings.
It must be one of the most difficult paintings in my life!! I never did a self-portrait and find it doesn't quite looks like me...

My right hand side is colored, and my left hand side is black and white. It must be because I sometimes feel incomplete. Sometimes, not the whole time, because I am smiling anyway and it doesn't make me feel unhappy. Mostly frustrated or melancholic sometimes, and it questions me. I am 40 now and my biological clock ticked away my possibility of having any children.
From my belly grows a tree of endometriosis. 
Especially the media and community that makes me feel like an incomplete woman because I don't have any children. Women are supposed to have children, don't they?
But I'm a happy woman anyway and there's soooo much to do in this world to make it a nicer place for other people's great children to grow up :-)

Here is a not so great photo of my entry in the Brandt book. I used the images from the post below to create a Brandt style gate for the Capitol in the fictional world of Panem (Hunger Games). Marker, Metallic ink & Watercolor pencil.

Brandt - Hunger Games?

Ok. I don't know if the Hunger Games books and movies are a big deal outside of the US....but can someone honestly tell me that you don't see Brandt's influence on the book covers??? Look at the birds. Coincidence? I think I know exactly how I'm going to approach my entry to this moly. May the odds be ever in my favor!

...it took some time, but mostly because I kept on going places. Good news: my contribution is now done, and this book is ready to go! 

Biggest challenge was to realize that Brandt was an artist who worked with metal, so I had to ask myself: can my design be fabricated? With some tweaking, yes, I believe so. I borrowed the imagery of deer, but decided against the symmetry that is found in the majority of Brandt's work. This was a fun challenge :)

I finally finished my entry in the Gustav Klimt book. I really like working with all the gold. Also I don't paint like this all that often so it was nice to do something a little different . I really enjoyed doing this entry.

Edgar Brandt book

I finished my entry in the Edgar Brandt book. I honestly struggled with what I wanted to do. I decided to do a rendition of his flowers but I added faces in them. This Book will be dropped in the mail in the next few days.

working on Klimt

Hello everybody,
finally I am working on Klimt moly. I didn't want to just copy some of his work, so I tried to find some interesting fact about him and I found out, that he has one weird nightmare that was haunting him for his whole life. It was dream about women swimming naked in deep water. I don't know why it was so frustrating for him, most of the men would find that dream very appealing, wouldn't they? :)
Soooo, this is my idea for the entry. The golden circle was already there so I tried to somehow include it into the drawing.

Joey's book !

Hi everybody!

I finally managed to find time to work on Joey's Shephard Fairy.

I chose to work with this image of the woman peeping from behind two curtains, because it is how I feel: peeping behind a dark curtain, to darker sides of life, and peeping behind a light curtain, to sunny sides of life. What will the future be? Some important choices are to be made. It will surely be a mixture of both, as life is seldom black and white...

The curtains are a collage of fine japanese paper. The drawing is in Amsterdam Acrylic and ink.

So Tim, did you catch up or do I bring the book to Nathaly (I'm not totally sure to be ready yet. I have to sleep on it until next weekend). Is it OK if I make only 2 pages? Or should I absolutely make a 3rd one?

Ode to Frida

For this book I employ Frida's frequent theme of devastating loss. A little back story on this entry will probably help. I am blind in one eye. My parents and doctor don't know if I was able to see before they removed a cataract at age 4, but it is doubtful. Borrowing from two elements in the first entry of this book, I resurrected the red ribbon and cut out motifs. Frida often used banners and text within her work. Within the red banner I have written "Vero cleramente con uno, lo que es invisibe para dos." Which can be loosely translated to mean "I see clearly with one what is invisible with two." For the cut out, I removed the area where my right eye should be. This was a somewhat cathartic piece.

I found myself looking at "A few small nips," "The two Fridas" and of course the many self portraits. There are several works with split backgrounds, and I used that concept to help transition from the gray clouds of albina's entry into by own. Danica, I hope this meets your approval. For those of you who still need to work in this book, I found the following site particularly helpful for its visual timeline.

Hello, everyone! I have finished Danica's Frida-inspired book, and it will be going out to Melissa today.

Little about the image I created: Frida's work is very personal, often depicting physical pain and emotional suffering she had to live with, and because of the abundance of self-portraits, it was hard for me to figure out how to best creatively interpret spirit of Frida without simply copying her work. I also really didn't want to dive into self-portrature :) What I ended up doing is drawing on the iconography of Frida Kahlo, but not exactly on her style of painting. Three of her pantings served as a basis for my interpretation : The Two Fridas - heart and stormy skies; Self-portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird - I used the elements of her necklace from that wonderful portrait, though I changed the form of thorns; Roots - plant vines.
