Ode to Frida
For this book I employ Frida's frequent theme of devastating loss. A little back story on this entry will probably help. I am blind in one eye. My parents and doctor don't know if I was able to see before they removed a cataract at age 4, but it is doubtful. Borrowing from two elements in the first entry of this book, I resurrected the red ribbon and cut out motifs. Frida often used banners and text within her work. Within the red banner I have written "Vero cleramente con uno, lo que es invisibe para dos." Which can be loosely translated to mean "I see clearly with one what is invisible with two." For the cut out, I removed the area where my right eye should be. This was a somewhat cathartic piece.
I found myself looking at "A few small nips," "The two Fridas" and of course the many self portraits. There are several works with split backgrounds, and I used that concept to help transition from the gray clouds of albina's entry into by own. Danica, I hope this meets your approval. For those of you who still need to work in this book, I found the following site particularly helpful for its visual timeline.

Joey's Book; Melissa's Entry

The inspiration was Fairey's "MayDay" Mural. I've taken a "See no Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil" approach to the montage. Marker and paint. Going to give the paint a day to dry and decide if I need to do any touch up work anywhere. Hope you like this one Joey. I had fun getting to dig beyond what I already knew of his work.

Albina's Book; My Entry
Think I'm almost done with my entry in Albina's book. Are sirens gods or monsters? You decide. Followed this image as my inspiration. I hope you will be pleased, Albina. I had fun working in your book...once I got over the fear.

Edgar Brandt's moly ready to go to Slovakia!

My interpretation of Edgar Brandt's style is laden with heavy black lines and thick textures underneath. My aim was to create a stylistic feature which would interwove my style with his. In the back pocket of my moly, you will find little cards with Brandt's lamp (just like the one you can see glued to the back of my moly's cover). They are for you guys. I have put in the pocket enough cards for each artist in this exchange. Take care.

Barbara's book ready to leave

So I prepared my book and it is ready to leave for BelleVue! Now I just have to find back her address... :-)
Here are pictures of the front pages and of the first 3 pages with the Alechinsky theme. I painted some memories, choices of life and some favorite moments of every day and of always, trying to figure out who I am. What are your choices of life and are you happy with them?
The central painting is on a collage with watercolor paper and the promenade marginale is with ink and watercolor on japanese paper collage.
Have fun !

Arcimboldo was a gamer
As you can see, I finally settled on an artist. I chose to work in the style of Guiseppe Arcimboldo with a composite marker rendering. Instead of food, I select favorite games from my childhood. Cannot wait to see what the rest of you are up to.

Sample Rotation Chart

With 8 artists, we would only have one rotation. In a traditional moly, there are 30 pages. So if you're doing a small size that would give each artist a little over 3.5 pages. If you have a large one it holds 25 pages, so that would be about 3 each. Do we want a uniform size or let each artist choose his or her own book size? It's important to note that larger books may add to the shipping for each person that has to send it on. What would you all like to do? Last thing to vote on is our first ship date. It's almost Sept 1st. Does October 1st work for everyone? I recall that many of us have posted some unhappiness with poor communication and lost books. To be fair, we could post an image by Oct 1st. Once the person below you posts their picture, feel free to mail your book to them.

Introductions
I see that Anna Denise has set up our blog. Since I will be leaving for vacation this weekend I wanted to make a quick introduction so that if you don't hear from me next week, you know I am still very interested in this group.
I am Melissa from Pennsylvania (USA). I'm a high school art teacher and currently participating in two other groups - mxportraits1 and molyx25 and am a moderator for some of the moly groups and the flickr group. Looking forward to getting to know everyone in this exchange. I'm pretty handy with excel and have made progress charts for some of the other groups to keep the artists organized. Will be glad to help out in this exchange in any way I can.
In the initial comments I had posted another artist's name, but I have been rethinking my selection. Currently thinking I would love to have everyone do an Eric Carle style entry in my book (does not have to be a child theme, however).
Be back in touch after August 20th.
